  • Planning into Practice: Developing a New Library Unit Around Research Data Services |  Bryan Sinclair (Associate Dean, Public Services, Georgia State University), Jeff Steely (Dean of Libraries, Georgia State University)

Guided by our new Strategic Plan at Georgia State University Library, we have begun to develop a team and services in support of research and data literacy across multiple disciplines involving quantitative, qualitative, business and spatial/GIS data. Librarians are now available to collaborate, instruct, and advise across the entire research lifecycle, including identifying, acquiring, and using unique data sets, using data analysis software (Stata, SPSS, NVivo, ArcGIS, etc.), assisting with data visualization and survey design, consulting on data management issues, and promoting the sharing and reuse of research data. Other libraries like GSU may be looking to expand their offerings in this growing and needed area. In this session, we will share the planning process that went into developing our Research Data Services Team, including the formative work of our Strategic Planning Research Lifecycle Task Force. We will share experiences with building this unique program from scratch, including team building, hiring and recruitment efforts, involvement of graduate assistants and interns, marketing and promotion, programming, and assessment methods in place in order to ensure the continued success of this vital new library role.

  • Re-Thinking an Instruction Program in Time and Space | Melanie Maksin (Director of Research Support and Outreach Programs, Center for Science and Social Science Information / Yale University Library)

Five years after the creation of the Center for Science and Social Science Information at Yale University, we had a robust instruction program of workshops to draw in science and social science researchers. With sessions on advanced searching in Google, research data management, resources for entrepreneurship, and more, librarians were busy throughout the fall and spring, but attendance was dwindling. Were we reaching researchers at their point of need? Were we marketing our instruction program in a way that resonated with our constituents? And, after five years, was our program stale?

This presentation will approach re-thinking an instruction program from three perspectives. First, from that of the librarians who teach: What do they need in order to move from a 60-minute, computer-classroom-based model of instruction to a suite of approaches that is more flexible in terms of timing and teaching spaces? Next, from the perspective of an instruction program coordinator: what does this increased flexibility mean for marketing and assessing instruction, and how can a coordinator help a team of librarians develop the necessary skills to deliver instruction in these ways? Finally, from the perspective of participants: Does re-thinking our instruction program have an impact on students’ learning, research, or professional endeavors?
